Dividend tax after the April 2026 rate rise
From 6 April 2026, tax on dividends above the allowance uses rates of 10.75% (ordinary/basic), 35.75% (upper/higher) and 39.35% (additional). The dividend allowance remains £500 for 2026/27. These dividend rates apply across the UK; Scottish Income Tax bands do not replace them for dividend income.
Why other income matters
Dividends are taxed after your Personal Allowance and after other income have used up pieces of the basic-rate and higher-rate bands. Two directors taking identical dividends can owe different tax if their salaries differ. Company corporation tax is separate — this calculator only estimates the personal tax on dividends once profits have left the company.
What WeCalculate does
Enter other taxable income (for example salary) and dividend income. We apply a simplified Personal Allowance, the £500 dividend allowance, and then stack remaining dividends through basic, higher and additional dividend rates using England/Wales/NI band widths. Scottish taxpayers still use UK dividend rates; their salary tax may differ — see our England vs Scotland tool for employment income.
ISA and other wrappers
Dividends inside a Stocks & Shares ISA are not counted as taxable dividend income. Venture schemes and foreign dividends can have special treatments. Keep vouchers and broker statements for your records.
Planning notes for limited company owners
Salary versus dividend mix sits inside a wider picture: corporation tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, Student Loan thresholds and Personal Allowance taper above £100,000. A neat dividend chart is not a full extraction strategy. If numbers are material, use an accountant.
Worked example
Priya earns £29,570 salary and £3,000 dividends in 2026/27. After Personal Allowance, part of her salary sits in the basic band. Of the dividends, £500 is covered by the allowance and £2,500 is taxed at 10.75% — matching the style of HMRC’s published example structure with updated rates.
Limitations
Ordering rules for allowances are simplified. From later years HMRC has announced further ordering changes for some reliefs — re-read GOV.UK when you file. This page is educational and not tax advice.
Allowance stacking order (simplified)
In broad educational terms, Personal Allowance covers income first, other non-dividend income uses up the basic-rate band, then dividends consume the £500 dividend allowance and whatever band capacity remains. Real Self Assessment software applies statutory ordering with more nuance, especially where savings income and the starting rate for savings appear.
Directors and minimum wage-style salaries
Many owner-managers take a modest salary around National Insurance thresholds and extract further value as dividends. After the 2026 dividend rate rise, the personal tax cost of dividends increased at basic and higher bands. Re-forecast extractions rather than copying a 2024 spreadsheet.
Corporation tax still comes first
Profits are taxed inside the company before dividends. Comparing “salary NIC + Income Tax” versus “CT + dividend tax” needs both layers. This page isolates the dividend layer so searchers who already know their dividend voucher amounts can estimate personal tax quickly.
Reporting thresholds
You may need to tell HMRC about dividends even when tax is small, depending on totals and whether you already file Self Assessment. Use HMRC’s official checks rather than unverified social media rules of thumb.
Family companies
Dividends must follow shareholdings. Informal “I’ll take more this year, you take more next year” without share rights creates legal and tax risk. Alphabet shares and properly documented rights are accountant territory.
Scenario walkthrough
Other income £50,270 (roughly filling personal allowance + basic band in rUK) plus £20,000 dividends: much of the dividend stack may fall into higher dividend rate territory after the £500 allowance, producing a larger bill than the same dividend beside a £12,570 salary. Try both figures in the form to feel the sensitivity.
Foreign dividends and withholding
Overseas dividends may arrive with foreign withholding tax. Double tax relief rules can reduce UK liability but need careful claim entries. This calculator assumes UK dividends without foreign tax credits.
Stock options and employer shares
Some employment share schemes produce employment income rather than dividends when options are exercised. Later dividends on acquired shares follow dividend rules. Do not paste an option gain into the dividend box.
Record-keeping for vouchers
Keep dividend vouchers or registrar statements showing company name, date, and amount. Brokers’ annual summaries help when you hold many lines. HMRC can ask for evidence even when tax is modest.
Comparison with salary for rough intuition
Salary suffers Income Tax and employee NI above thresholds; employer NI is an extra company cost. Dividends avoid employee NI but suffer corporation tax first and then dividend tax. The "best" mix moves when rates change — as they did in April 2026 for dividends. Re-run scenarios each tax year instead of reusing old blog posts.
